Vane ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and related services (collectively, the "Service").
By using Vane, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with our policies and practices, please do not use our Service.
Data Storage: On Your Device
We do not run our own servers to store your data. Your weather preferences, saved locations, and cached weather data are stored locally on your device. This data may be included in your device backups depending on your iOS backup settings.
The only data that leaves your device is sent directly to third-party weather providers to fetch forecasts, and to RevenueCat to validate subscriptions. We never see or store this data ourselves.
Information We Collect
Location Data
Vane requires access to your device's location to provide weather forecasts for your current location. Your location is sent directly to weather data providers to fetch forecasts. We do not store your location data on any server we control, and it is not shared with third parties for marketing purposes.
Saved Locations
If you choose to save locations (available in Pro subscriptions), this data is stored locally on your device only. We do not have access to your saved locations.
Usage Data
We may collect anonymous, aggregated usage statistics to improve the Service, including app crashes and performance metrics. This data does not identify individual users and does not include your location or weather data.
Third-Party Services
Vane integrates with the following third-party services:
Weather Data Providers
To fetch weather forecasts, your location coordinates are sent to multiple third-party weather services. These include Apple WeatherKit, Met Office, and other national and commercial weather providers. The specific providers used may vary based on your location and subscription tier.
These providers receive only your location coordinates to return weather data. They do not receive your name, email, or any other personal information from Vane. Each provider has their own privacy policy governing how they handle location data.
RevenueCat (Subscription Management)
We use RevenueCat to validate Pro subscriptions. When you subscribe, RevenueCat receives:
- Device information (device type, OS version)
- Transaction data (Apple receipt files, purchase history)
- An anonymous app-specific user identifier
- IP address (which may indicate general location)
RevenueCat does not receive:
- Your name or email address
- Your precise location or saved locations
- Your weather data or app preferences
- Payment card details (handled by Apple)

What We Don't Do
To be clear about our practices, Vane does not:
- Collect your name, email address, or create user accounts
- Display advertisements or share data with ad networks
- Sell or share your data with data brokers
- Track you across other apps or websites
- Store your location history on our servers
- Send marketing emails or push notifications (except weather alerts you enable)
- Use your weather data for any purpose other than showing it to you
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide accurate weather forecasts for your location
- Aggregate data from multiple weather sources
- Validate your subscription status for Pro features
- Improve app performance and fix technical issues
- Comply with legal obligations
Data Security
Your data is stored locally on your device using iOS security features. Communications with weather providers and RevenueCat use encrypted HTTPS connections. Since we don't store your data on our own servers, there is no central database that could be breached.
Data Retention
Your weather preferences and saved locations remain on your device until you delete the app or clear its data. Cached weather data is automatically refreshed and old data is discarded. We do not retain any of your data on servers we control.
Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Withdraw consent for location access (via device settings)
- Object to data processing
Since your data is stored on your device, you can delete it at any time by uninstalling Vane or clearing its data in iOS Settings. To exercise other rights or ask questions, contact us at the email address below.
Children's Privacy
Vane is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Since Vane does not collect names, emails, or create accounts, and stores all data locally, it is inherently safer for privacy. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
